What is Brick Tinting?
Put in a nutshell, brick tinting is considered to be the single most efficient and cost effective method of making permanent changes to the colour of mortar, bricks and other masonry substrates. A successful technique used for 40 years or so, the process involves application of a potassium-silicate medium containing oxide-based colour-fast pigments to the surface of bricks and other masonry surfaces.
How it Works
The tint used is not a type of surface coating or paint, but a combination of a liquid chemical binder (the potassium-silicate) to which iron oxide pigments have been added. On application, this mixture penetrates into the brick/masonry substrate, where it forms a permanent bond. In essence, the process enables lightening, darkening or a complete change of brick/substrate colours in order to achieve an exact match to specific requirements.

Effect on Mortar/Brickwork
Over the years, experience has proven that this kind of treatment has no adverse effects on the performance attributes and durability of bricks/masonry substrates. UV resistant, light fast and not affected by weather extremes, the brick tint formula allows bricks/substrates to ‘breathe’ as though untreated, which means that the treated wall/building’s continued natural weathering process remains unaffected.
Applications of Brick Tinting
This brick/masonry colouring technique can be employed for a wide range of purposes, including:
Creation of seamless joints by elimination of inconsistencies in the colours of different brick/masonry batches
Rectification of mismatched brick colours
Specific colouration of bricks that is unachievable via brick selection alone
